Direct experience of both legal directory publishing and front-line directories management roles in busy law firms is vital in order to offer clients an effective directories consultancy service.
My combined experience of legal directory publishing, in-house law firm directories management, and as an independent consultant to law firms around the world, gives me a full-circle perspective and insight into the world of legal directories.
In the late 1990s I was part of the team that worked on the launch and development of Chambers Global, one of the leading international guidebooks.
It’s difficult to advise law firms on directories unless you’ve been there yourself and can appreciate the unique culture and pressures inside law firms.
So I joined the leading international firm, Herbert Smith, in 2004. Based in London, I ran the press office, and worked on legal directories, communications, and media relations initiatives.
In 2006 I moved to White & Case in New York to manage the firm’s global directories program.
The role involved managing the full range of legal directories, publications and surveys across the world, and producing hundreds of submissions every year.
After leaving White & Case, I spent six months consulting for Best Lawyers. I helped develop the Best Lawyers-US News Best Law Firms survey, and enhanced Best Lawyers’ relationships with law firms and the media in Europe following the company’s international expansion.
In 2008 I became a directories consultant to make the directories process smoother and more effective for law firms, and to help lawyers promote themselves to the growing number of legal rankings, listings, league tables, surveys and awards.
Originally known simply as “Lloyd Pearson”, the consultancy rebranded as 393 Communications in 2012.
As well as legal directories, my professional interests are international and emerging legal markets, the business of law, legal marketing, and innovation in legal services.
I pride myself on a high level of responsiveness.
In practical terms, this means that if you call me, I will pick up the phone, or call you back quickly.
If you email me with a query, I’ll respond quickly – whatever the time. I am accessible and work across multiple international time zones.
Strong communications are central to my way of working, and essential in a service business.

Outside The Office
Away from work, I’m a husband, and father to two little girls.
I enjoy reading books about business, finance, history, and politics.
